ROAD CONDITIONS

Western Hutt To Be Closed Today Reporting on the condition of the roads out of Wellington to the east coast, the Automobile Association (Wellington) hist night stated that the Public Works Department had cleared away the slip iu the Taira Gorge just north of the Stokes Valley junction, on Saturday afternoon. The department’s bulldozer was working all yesterday at the old slip at the north end of the gorge, an'd consequently the road was kept open for traffic. A track was cut over the large slip on the Western Hutt Road just north of Belmont at noon yesterday, opening the road for traffic, but toward evening conditions were becoming rather bad at the slip. The department has advised the association that the Western Hutt Road will be closed for traffic today, so that reasonable opportunity will be given to work on the slip just north of Belmont an'd on the other north of the Pahautanui Road junction. Consequently motorists from Wellington will not be able to gain access to the Haywards-Pahautanui road. v The association expressed its appreciation of the work and enthusiasm of the officers and men of the Public Works Department in their untiring efforts to keep the roads open to traffic. The Ngaio Gorge road was closed to traffic yesterday afternoon, and apparently no work was being carried out there. According to advice received from the Hutt County Council, it is not expected that the old Paekakariki hill roa'd will be opened before Wednesday.
