ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Crowds At A.N.A. Club During Weekend

The Army, Navy and Air Force Club celebrated its second birthday at the weekend. Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, the club was formed, as on .the seventh of that month the R.S.A. approved of the club using its rooms, and on September 17 the executive was appointed. On October 1, 1939, the club commenced operations in the R.S.A. building. Hence the iveek just past may be truly considered the birthday of the club. On Friday, Saturday' and Sunday evenings, with due ceremony the tecdecker large birthday cakes were cut by senior women members of the executive. Representatives of the services suitably replied to the greetings of the chairman and vice-chairman and expressed to the women on behalf of the men their appreciation and thanks for work done on their behalf. On Saturday evening an interlude in dancing was provided by a ballet of A. girls. The pretty frocking and graceful movements of the dancers made a colourful picture. On Sunday the club was again thronged and high tea was served and supplied by the A.N.A. girls. The men adjourned to the ballroom, where the members of the girls’ auxiliary presented a pageant, “Britain and , her Allies,” which was much appreciated by the men and was received with great applause. The rooms were tastefully decorated with cherry blooms and “V” signs in red, white and blue were everywhere. During the past year 41,600 meals have been served and 16,000 morning and afternoon teas. The executive gracefully acknowledged the following hampers: Air Force Relations, Hawke’s Bay;, per Miss W. Bell; Air Force Relations, Masterton, per Mrs. J. Lord; Mrs. W. B. Gillies, Totara Flats, Masterton; Mataikona Ladies’ Guild, Tinul; Mrs. Gilbertson, Hastings. The club is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, including Sunday.
