Wellington College Championships SPIRITED BOUTS IN FINALS That the curriculum of Wellington College provides for developing sinews as well .as brains was evident from the spirited work seen in the finals of the boxing championships in the college gymnasium last night. The lads showed that they had been wdl tutored in the arc of self-defence, and that they were physically fit. Despite the stormy conditions, there was a large attendance, including Mr. W. A. Armour, principal of the college, and Mrs Armour; and Captain C. D. Mullany (chairman) amd Mr. B. J. Ryan (secretary), of the Wellington Boxing Association. Following are the results: — ~ , „ Mosquito: M. G. Bate, 6.5, outpointed K. W. Gray, 5.11, iu a bright spar. The winner bad the advantage iu weight, heigb.. Tiger: J. Rodiey,- 6.12, outpointed w. A. Stagg. 6.10, by virtue .of fighting spirit. The loser used a good straight left. Bantam: G. T. Martin, 7.7, outpointed R. A. Gumberworth, 7.13. in a hard-mttiug contest. Both were far spent at the finish. Junior feather: C. A. McLeod, 7.13, outpointed N. G. Marcella, 7.3, in an even contest, both lads infusing pleuty of ide. into their work. ‘ Senior feather: G. T. Denuiss, *.H, out pointed J. T. Turner, 8.7. There was little between the pair, who were inclined to swing too much. ■ Light: D. J. Lend, 9,8, and G. 1. Dennie, 7.11, boxed a draw which roused the audience to great, enthusiasm. Both kept hot.li hands going like flails till they.were eo exhausted they could eland. Welter: G. A. F. Mullins, 11.0, by a technical knockout in the third round. The winner proved himself a good two-handed boxer, with a lot of steam behind his right glove. Light-heavy: D. F. Mason, 11.5. carried too many guns for W. E. Chegwidden, the referep slopping the contest before the first round had ended. The winner had power behind his blows Heavv: N. MeD. Gapes. 13.9. was too heavy for K. A. - Vance, 12.2. ■ The lighter man did a nimble sidestep to keep away from the heavy artillery of Ins opponent, and darted in at times to score with a left te the face, but Gapes, who had a good smother, kept relentlessly after bls man, and his heavy blows won him the decision by a convincing margin Captain P. G. Thomson, physical instructor at Trentham Military Camp, who before the war was physical instructor at Wellington College, made a competent referee, and the judges were Messrs 1. Brodie and J, Dighton.
