TOBRUK’S DEFENDERS

House To Send Message Of Appreciation A message of goodwill is to be sent from New Zealand to the defenders of Tobruk, according to a reply given by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, to an urgent question asked by Mr. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Fraser’s reply was greeted by applause from both sides of the House. Mr. Wilkinson, in asking if such a message could be sent, suggested that it should express New Zealand’s unbounded admiration for the troops' long-continued and glorious defence of Tobruk, which had withstood over 1250 enemy attacks. "I do not know if I cun say I will do it with pleasure, but I will do so with a great deal of pride,” Mr. Fraser said. “My pleasure would be the greater if they were relieved and triumphant, but we all must admire the marvellous stand made there. It would be expressing the sentiments of the House and the country if a message were sent to these heroic defenders.”
