' Tribute To Dannevirke Citizen

On Friday afternoon a committee o_f Dannevirke citizens called on Mrs. K. Pickard at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. and Mr. R. Dingle, to present her with an armchair in appreciation of her many years of service to others. Mrs. Pickard’s visitors , included the mayor and mayoress. Mr. and Mrs.. 18. Gibbard; Miss Leipst, the matron of the Dannevirke Hospital, Sister Compton; Miss F. W. Murray, former sub-matron of the hospital; Mrs. M. Webley, Mrs. W. Dobson, Miss V. Clarkson, and Messrs, F. 0. Devlin, P. C. Smith, chairman of the hospital board, and J. Anderson. Mrs. Gibbard presented Mrs. Pickard with a bouquet of cyclamen and violets.

The* mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Dannevirke and district, said that he wished to pay tribute to Mrs. Pickard’s work over a period of many years, Including a great many services rendered without any publicity.. Mrs. Pickard had not wanted any recognition made of her- years of service, so it was suggested that a bed be presented to the children’s ward of the public hospital in her name, in addition to the chair.

.Others who spoke in appreciation of Mrs. Pickard’s work were. Mt. P. O. Smith, Mr. F. O. Devlin, Miss Leipst, and Mr. J. Anderson.

On behalf of his mother, Mr. T. H. Pickard thanked the gathering for-the gift ahd their expressions of appreciation. He said her work had been a labour of love for which she asked no rewards. She had been amply rewarded in trying to bring happiness to others.
