LADY NEWALL PRESENT
Symphony Orchestra Concert A representative gathering attended the Wellington Symphony Orchestra's concert in the Wellington Town Hall, last night. Her Excellency, Lady Newall was present, accompanied by Miss Nora Walton, lady-in-waiting, and was received by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the society and members of the executive council. Other well-known guests were Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee, M. and Madame Andre Bouquet, Mr. and Mrs. Feng .Wang, and Count Wodziqkl. Lady Newall wore a gown of grape purple chiffon velvet under a fulllength evening coat in puce brocade. She had pale pink roses pinned on one of the broad lapels and carried a Victorian posy of daphne and violets, which had been presented to her and which toned perfectly with her . ensemble. Mrs. Gilmer was in a black wool sheer frock with pearl ornaments, and a black velvet wrap. Seated with the official party were Mr D A. Ewen, vice-president, and Mrs. Ewen, Mrs. W. Young, president of the women’s auxiliary committee, and Mrs. B. Harper. Members of the executive present were Miss Valerie Corliss, Mrs. C. H. T. Skelley. Miss Irene Spidy, Mr. T. J. Young, Mr. E. Gilby, Mr. T. Magill. Programme sellers, organized by Miss Spidy, were Misses Jean Gilmer, Patricia Greenfield-Brown, Ngaire Horton, Veronica Smith, Ruth Skerman, Margaret Arlow, and M. Leigh. Mr. H. Gittings was in charge of house arrangements. The hall was well filled and . there were many smartly-dressed women among the audience. Black frocks were worn by women members of the orchestra, creating an effective ensemble allied with the black and white of the men’s evening wear. Palms and dwarf shrubs had been arranged round the stage.
