NO RUSH OF ELECTORS

Little More Than Half On Roll Vote

There was never any evidence of a big pull at rhe Wellington city or suburban polling places on Saturday. When inquiries were made at widely-separ-ated points the answer was always the same, that the recording of votes was being done in a fairly even flow, and at no time during th? day was there anything like a rush of electors to any booth. In some of the city [Killing places the voting livened up a little between noon and 1 pin.; thereafter it slackened off again. It was therefore not surprising to find that some 31,650 persons only had recorded their votes, out of a total of 60,482 names on a heavily-purged roll. This number is 11,610 votes less than were polled at the elections in May, 1938.

It might be thought that with the demand for manpower for defence purposes the returning officer, Mr. Norrie, would have experienced some difficulty in securing staffs for the many polling booths, but when questioned on that head he said that probably there were more applicants for the work than ever before. In response to his call, some 400 mon turned up. There would have been no difficulty in staffing the booths twice over. While the majority of the staff employed were men. usually over military age, a proportion were young women, as a rule witli office experience, who were quite apt at this class of work.
