THE PROVINCES

Mr. Mansford Back In Palmerston North CITIZENS’ MAYOR IN HASTINGS Small Polls In Wairarapa Though considerable interest in local body issues was reported in the larger centres, polling in the Wair.trapa was light. The swing away from Labour appeared general, where political divisions were clear-cut, except in Wanganui, where the Labour mayor was returned by a fair majority and council seats.were evenly divided. Mr. A. E. Mansford retained the. Palmerston North mayoralty, beating two opponents. With the exception of Mr. Hodgens, M.P., who has been a member of the Palmerston North City Council for many years, Labour candidates for the council finished al the bottom of the poll. Mr. Hodgens lost his seat on the Manawatu Power Board.

In Masterton. where the sitting mayor. Mr. T. Jordan was returned unopposed, only one sitting councillor was unseated.

The Citizens’ candidate for the mayoralty of Hastings, Mr. A. J. Rainbow, had a sweeping victory, and in Xapier. the sitting mayor. Mr. T. W. Hereock, was returned unopposed. In botli the Hastings and Napier borough council contests, Citizens’ candidates were returned exclusively. In Wanganui Mr. Rogers, M.L.C., was returned as mayor with a majority of 1521 votes. Six Labour and six Citizen councillors were elected.
