Citizens’ Candidates Win AH City Council Seats SENSATIONAL LANDSLIDE

In one of the biggest landslides in the history of municipal politics in Wellington the Citizens’ ticket captured all the 15 seats on the city council and unseated all six sitting'Labour councillors.

New members of the council, all from the Citizens’ ticket, are: Mrs. Knox Gilmer, and Messrs. B. J. Todd, R. H. Nimmo, F. W. Furkert. C. M. Bowden, AV. H. Stevens and J. D. Sievwright. The defeated councillors, all Labour, were: Mr. R. McKeen, M.P.. who was Labour’s mayoral candidate, Messrs. C. H. Chapman, M.P., T. Brindle, M.L.C., P. M. Butler and A. Black, and Mrs. R. Semple, wife of the Minister of National Service. Messrs. McKeen, Chapman and Brindle had served long terms on the council. Hislop, said: ”1. want to thank yon for the great honour you have done me in re-electing me mayor and also, now that the light, is over, to wish good health to Mr. MeKeen and Mrs. MeKeen.” On Ids suggestion three cheers were given for Mr. and Mrs. MeKeen. “On an occasion such as this, I can only thank all those who have worked for me and my team, who have voted and expressed confidence in us,” Mr. Hislop continued. "During my next term I will do the same things on the same principles as J have done in the past, and will devote all my energy to serving the people of Wellington, and through them the people of New Zealand, and to supporting the people of Britain who are standing the brunt, of the light for freedom —that is what we must keep ahead of us til! the lime. - ’ Mr. Hislop .specially thanked his wife for tile assistance she had given him in his campaign. The mayoress called for three cheers for Mrs. MeKeen, who. she said, had always been a great friend of hers.
