Distribution To School Children The intention of the Government to distribute apples free to school children was announced by the Minister of Education, Mr. Mason, when speaking ar the opening of a new primary school at Ntfrsewood on Thursday. He said the decision was made as a result of the effect of the war on the shipping position. The distribution of apples free to pupils of all schools was not intended to take the place of free milk, which would continue to be provided as in the past. The Minister said yesterday that a more detailed statement would be made later.
SCHEME TO START WITHIN TEN DAYS
Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, March 7.
The "apples in schools” scheme having received official approval, it would be introduced within 19 days, said Mr. W. Benzies, superintendent of the Interna! Marketing Division in Hawke’s Bay, in an adddress to fruit-growers. He' said the scheme would mean giving substantial aid in the disposal of the season's pip fruit crop. Distribution would begin in the main centres and spread outward all over tbe country. It would include private and church schools. , The supply of almost tree-ripened fruit to schools would be an excellent advertising medium, commented Mr. Benzies.
