TAITA GORGE ROAD
Repairs To Be Completed Shortly START NEXT WEEK According to an official of the PublicWorks Department, mechanized operations on the Taita Gorge Road, which was damaged during the heavy rains last month, are to begin next week. It is expected that the road will be open to traffic again within a short period from the starting of this work. This portion of the road lies between Stokes Valley and Silverstream. During the February deluge this section of the highway was swept away by the Hutt River for half its width over a distance of several chains. As an alternate route—the Western Hutt Road—was available to traffic, repairs to the damaged road were not considered as urgent as in the Ngahauranga Gorge, where tbe damage to the highway was extensive. A certain amount of inconvenience was caused to persons travelling by bus north of Lower Hutt, but the normal services should be operating again shortly. In the operations on the closed section of the Taita Gorge Road next week it is proposed to put a cutting through the hill, for which work a bulldozer is now available.
