Yachtsmen Favour Ward Island Ward Island has become a popular resort for yachtsmen and boatmen. The top and the eastern side of the island are covered with grass and ice-plant is growing on the cliff-face of the Wellington side. In a southerly there is a safe landing to be made at the northern end, and in a northerly there is a beach on Eastbourne side. The beach is gravel, which is one of its few'drawbacks. Anothe ris the lack. of water, though the yachtsmen are not inconvenienced by this. There are positions for tile lighting of fires and an abundant supply of driftwood. South, of the island there is a good fishing ground, and on a calm day a string of fishing craft can usually be seen. At night if it is calm, the water is phosphorescent and fish can be seen darting about on the surface. Taken altogether, yachtsmen find it an ideal picnic spot.
