Various Types Of Offences Dealt With Yesterday

Charges relating to all types of offences were brought in the Magistrates’ Court,' Wellington, yesterday, before Mr. J. D. Stout,S.M. The list was an unusually large one, lasting the whole morning. A fine of £lO was imposed upon Thomas Patrick Wilkins, aged. 34, a bus driver, for giving a false fire alarm at the corner of Taranaki and Ghuznee Streets, Wellington. Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine sirid that that sort of offence was looked upon as a very serious matter by the fire brigade. On a charge of drunkenness Wilkins was convicted and discharged. A sentence of three months’ hard labour was imposed upon Frederick Arthur Carlyle Kingan, aged 68, a labourer, for being an idle and disorderly person, without means of support. “This man is a well-known character and is approaching his hundredth conviction,” said Senior-Sergeant Paine. Charged with unlawful conversion of a car valued at £240, the property of Jack Kelly, Thomas Henry Hale, aged 29, a labourer, was remanded for a week, bail being allowed in the sum of £lOO with a surety for £lOO. SeniorSergeant Paine said that a second man was wanted in connexion with the alleged offence, who had not yet been located. A remand till next Monday was granted in -the case of George Isaac Humphries, aged 26, and Ronald Black, aged 30, both seamen, who were charged with assaulting police constables off duty. “If these men are running about with a piece of tubing and a fin, one can draw only one inference,” commented the magistrate, when sentencing William David Winter, aged 24, it joiner, and Alexander Stuart, aged 18, a mechanic, to 14 days’ hard labour upon being convicted for stealing benzine to the value of two shillings. Michael Patrick Naughton, a storeman, was convicted rind sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, for committing an indecent act.
