VETERAN CRICKETERS

Wellington Scores 326 In

First Innings

ANNUAL MATCH WITH AUCKLAND

Bright form was shown in the annual match between teams of veteran cricketers representing Auckland and AVellington, which begun on the Basin Reserve, AVellington, yesterday afternoon.

Perfect weather favoured the oldtimers, tlie wicket was firm, and the outfield fast. The game was played in holiday spirit. E. O. Blamires, the Wellington captain, won the toss at 1,20 p.m., and courteously gave A. Anthony, the Auckland captain, the option of taking first use of the wicket. Tlie Auckland captain just as courteously, told the AA’ellington skipper to take advantage of the spin of the coin. The AVellington team gave a bright display of batting, running up 326 in 190 minutes. Baker, who had opened, and Christophersen put on 72 for the third wicket, taking the score from 41 to 113. Here Baker, who had reached 55 in 75 minutes, mishit a full toss from Jacobsen, and was caught by Snedden. The retiring batsman hit one six and six fours, but should have been caught by Dunning off Anthony after reaching the twenties. Christophersen and Gilligan put on 59 for the fourth wicket. Here Christophersen, who had reached 65 in 55 minutes, including 11 fours, was well taken at long off by Anthony off Snedden.

The feature of the innings was the brilliant form shown by F. AV. Gilligan, the one-time Essex County player, who is now principal of Wanganui Collegiate School. Gilligan last year scored a century for AVellington in the veterans’ match at Auckland, and he repeated this performance yesterday. Going in third wicket down, he was at the wickets for 115 minutes, and was left unbeaten with 116 to his credit. Using his feet skilfully, he hit 18 fours, and never looked like losing bis wicket, as all his strokes were made all along the carpet.

The AVellington innings, which had lasted for 190 minutes, closed at 5 p.m. for a total of 326. Coates, Anthony and Snedden bore the brunt of the Auckland attack, and all pegged away with great heart.

In about 20 minutes AV. 11. Garrard and Dunning scored 29 for Auckland without loss. The match will be concluded today, when play will be resumed at 1 p.m. The manager of the Auckland team, Air. lE. J. Price, lion, secretary of the Auckland Cricket Association, spent most of the day keeping the score-book for the Auckland team, with Air. L. J. ■ Calvert, who acted for the AVellington team. 11. AV. Rowntree, one of the best wicketkeepers New Zealand has produced, did meat work with the gloves, stumping one man smartly, and not allowing one single bye. The extras in the AVellington innings consisted of two leg byes and three no-balls. Details:—
