MASKED LIGHTS

Large Area In Hutt Valley Affected ' The lighting restrictions will affect the Hutt Valley and more particularly Petone and Eastbourne. The principal area concerned includes the whole waterfront from Eastibourne to a point seme two miles and a half south of xthe Petone railway crossing on the Hutt Road. Lights on higher levels in the valley which are visible from the open sea through the Heads are also affected. The industrial area, adjacent to Seaview Road, and all lights on the Petone Esplanade and in houses fronL in-' the Esplanade, will have to be dealt with. Korokoro, Normandale, the whole of the western hills, and some ot the eastern hills are in the affected area. Petone has two tall buildings, one of which, the Technical College, is brilliantly lit almost every night. These buildings will be affected. It is proposed to reduce the voltage of street lights throughout the Valley and bays to a mere glimmer, and motor vehicles on the coast roads will require to have masked lights. The regulations are now in force, and occupiers of factories .houses, schools and other buildings affected should take immediate steps to comply with them. The flood lights on the Hutt Recreation Ground will be in use for Home Guard practice today, but it is probable that after that their use will be discontinued. The same position applies at Petone.

Air. E. F. Hollands, engineer and general manager of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, has been appointed controller of the regulations in the Hutt Valley and in the Makatra-Porirua area.
