RESTRICTIONS EASED

Restrictions on the importation of incandescent filament electric light bulbs have been relaxed, and it will now be possible to obtain some supplies from overseas of the type used for domestic purposes. Previously only filament electric lamp bulbs having a power consumption exceeding ISO watts could be imported under the fifth import schedule, the intention of the Government being that for domestic bulbs dependence should be on the production of a recently established industry' in the Dominion, Importers have been notified that, in addition to licences already granted for electric lamp bulbs, licences may now be granted for imports over the whole range of the particular tariff item provided the total allocation does not exceed 40 per cent, of the total value of imports ot' such goods by the importer from all. sources in 1938. It is to be understood that licences so granted will be used by the importer to provide firstly for lamps of a class not made in New Zealand. After that he can obtain any classes. However, licences already granted for electric lamp bulbs may be used for importation of the classes of lamps only for which they were issued.
