Again Warmly Received
Proclaimed favourite of the Gilbert and Sullivan series by Sir Arthur Sullivan himself, "The Yeomen , of the Guard'' was again warmly received when presented in the Opera House. Wellington, last night. Sir Arthur favoured ".the Yeomen" not only because of its picturesque Elizabethan setting, and the mole than hint of the serious in its make-up. hut because for once there was a straightforward story, devoid entirely of that oddly fantastical and altogether capricious spirit of topsy-turveydom winch characterizes most of the opera plots—and perhaps this is why it is so enthusiastically acclaimed by the pubIvan Menzies is brilliant as Jack Point, the jester, and the music allocated to the role of Elsie Maynard gives Miss Viola Wilson further opportunities for her rich soprano voice. John Pollard has a good singing part in Colonel Fairfax. Evelyn Gardiner, Richard Watson, Gregory Stroud, Bernard Manning and \ incent McMurray are all well suited to their roles, as also is Peggy Shea as I’hocbe Meryll. , The chorus and orchestra, under .Mi. Leu Packer, are features of the show. "The Yeomen <»f the Guard will be performed this afternoon as well as I his evening, the season ending on Monday ni"ht. On Tuesday. and the two tollowing nights and on the Wednesday afternoon "lolanlhe" will be revived; and on Friday, the two following evenings, and on Saturday afternoon. March 1, there will be "The'Mikado.” On Tuesday. Marell 4, the two following evenings, and on nesday afternoon. "11.M.5. Pinafore, preceded by "Cox and Box." will be .produced.
