Victory queen CARNIVAL
INAUGURAL BALL For Public Services Queen
Much interest was shown in the inaugural ball held last night as an introduction to the Public Services Queen’s campaign in the Victory Queen Carnival. The event was most successful and tlie Majestic Cabaret was crowded witb supporters and friends.
The queen and her princesses ar rived outside the cabaret in specially decorated ears, Ihe first bearing ihe queen and tin escort, the six princesses following, each in a car that carried tlie queen’s colours, scarlet and royal blue and bore the names of the occupants and Hie organization sup porting that particular princess. A band preceded tlie procession. The queen, Miss Joan Young, ami her six princesses, all wore lovely evening frocks that blended to form an attractive colour combination. Miss Young added as “royal” insignia a coronet and scarlet and blue shoulder sash. She was partnered bj' Mr. G. Lloyd. The princesses were Miss Thelma Murk (Government departments), with Mr. John G. Goldstouc, Miss Jan Slomau (insurances), with Mr. C. A. Sharp, Miss Edna Miller (P. and T. and Police Departments), with Mr. Kevin Frost, Miss Marjorie McCune (local bodies), with Mr. Normal: Grenfell, .Miss Lorna Akroyd (banks), witli Mr. B. G. Didsbury, Miss Glen McMorran (education), with Mr. N. Pateliett.
Guests were welcomed by Mr. K. W. Kilpatrick, deputy-chairman of Hie Public Services Queen committee, and Mrs. Kilpatrick. Special guests were Mrs. P. Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser also attending for a period during the evening; the mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, chairman of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Committee, and Mrs. Hislop; Mr. J. G. Young, Director-General of Post and Telegraph Department, and Mrs. Young, parents of Miss Joan Young; Mr. J. Annand Smith, chairman, Victory Queen Carnival Committee, and Mrs. Annand Smith; Mr. P. R. N. Hanna, representing the ’ Associated Banks, and Mrs. Hanna; Mr. J. Engel, representing Public Service Commissioner, and Mrs. Engel; Dr. C. E. Beeby,'Director of Education, and Mrs. Beeby; Mr. K. It. Mitchell, and Miss N. Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Kilpatrick were also with ihe oflicial party. A fanfare from tlie orchestra announced tlie arrival of Hie queen and her princesses in the foyer of the cabaret. The party made its way to the official table, to appropriate music. Mr. Kilpatrick expressed his pleasure at tlie large attendance, extended a warm welcome to tlie guests, and introduced tiie queen and her princesses to tlie dancers. Mr. Hislop also addressed tlie gathering.
