The Government lias begun a drive against food-wasting and also is taking steps to ensure that the rationing is levelled out. Restaurant and hotel meals are being limited to one main dish. They are already serving only
one main dish of meat, fish or poultiy, but the new order will make this eompulsorv and also, will make a cheese or egg-dish count as a main dish. The Army is busy cutting down rations to the civilian level. MajorGeneral J. Buckley has been appointed Controller-General of Economy under the quartermaster-general and given the job of preventing waste. The ‘Daily Mail” says the Army is closing many canteens, thus preventing many soldiers from having double meais, which has been possible because many of the canteens cover the same area". Scores of thousands of men who are getting pay from their offices in addition to the army pay can eat at the men’s mess and‘then get another meal at a canteen for fid. or Bid.
