HEADQUARTERS IN A “DUG-OUT”

Victory Queen Carnival Headquarters of Wellington’s Victorv Queen Carnival will be in the temporary structure now being completed on the A.M.P. Society’s vacant allotment at the corner of Hunter and Featherston Streets. Here a substantial “dug-out,” about 18ft. by 12ft., has been built out of old concrete waterchannel blocks, which, laid flat one upon another, form a building strong enough to last for New Zealand’s second hundred years. It was roofed with galvanized iron yesterday. Further protection still is to be given this dug-out. On 'Saturday the engineer's section of the E.P.S. organization is going to turn out in force to sandbag the whole of the hut iu the approved manner. This idea has been acted upon elsewhere. There was throughout January a similar sand-bagged dug-out near the central railway crossing in Hastings, where people were being enrolled for the Home Guard. As members of the general public may possibly in the future desire to do some sandbagging for themselves, it is felt that Saturday's operations will provide a demonstration of how experts tackle the job. The main entrance to the dugout will be on the Featherston Street side.

In the meantime the foundation cavities which have been flooded with water, are being filled with spoil, so that the precincts of the hut will not be offensive during warm weather.
