PRIVATE HEARINGS

Not Favoured By Appeal

Board (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 19. ”On general principles this board is not in favour of private hearings of appeals. It is only in exceptional circumstances when the hearing of evidence in public may be detrimental to the war effort and the public interest generally that we feel that a private hearing may be justified.” In these words, Mr. C. It. Orr Walker, S.M.. chairman of the Auckland Armed Forces Appeal Board, outlined the board’s policy today. Counsel for an appellant was seeking a private hearing and said the grounds of the appeal necessitated the disclosure of vital facts concerning Government orders to a factory. Il was decided that certain of the evidence only should be heard in private.
