A large varding of 3099 sheep was penned at the Burnside sale today, the offering being made up almost entire.y ot ewes, the quality or which was a deelueu improvement oil that of late na-t-s-Wethers were forward in numbers sullicient for butchers’ requirements. All classes of sheep met with a slack sale, with prices 1/6 a head easier for wethers and 2/- a head for ewes. Prime heavy wethers made to 28/9. medium 22/- to -t/J. light from 16/-; extra prime young ewes 21/-, prime heavy ewes 16/-, prime l<*/6 to 15/-. light from 9/-. The fat lamb entry totalled 1484 head. The quality was not up to the standard of previous sales, there being a larger proportion of light and unfinished sorts. Extra prime heavy lambs made to 32/3, prime 24/- to 26/-, medium 21/- to 22/6. light from 19/-. . An entry of 255 fat cattle comprised principally medium and prime quality oxen, with a few consignments of heavy grades and a better class of cows and heifers than at the previous sale. The market opened with values firm at last week’s rates and continued on this basis throughout. Prices for good medium quality oxen showed an improvement of 15/- a head. Cows and heifers also met with a firm sale, prices being in vendors' favour. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold at up to £lB/12/6, prime heavy £l5/17/6 to £l6/17/6, medium £l2/2/6 to £l4. light from £lO/2/6: extra prime cows and heifers to £ll/7/6, prime heavy £B/7/6 to £9/17/6, medium £6/10/- to £7/12/6. light from £5/5/-. A medium entry of 50 vealers was or average quality, prices being equal to late rates. Best vealers made to £6/15/-. A large entry of store cattle included SOO head from the Lakes district. Best bullocks made to £lO, three-year-old bullocks £8 to £9/5/- and two-year-olds £o 5/. to £6/10/-. Good store cows made £5 to £5/10/-, and boner cows sold at late rates. A varding of 147 fat pigs was penned, about half porkers. Values were firm on late rates for bacon pigs and porkers were firmer by 5/- to 7/- a head. A small entry of 16 dairy cows met with a ready salle for all good sorts near to profit. ’ The top price was £l3.
