Quiet Precautions For
Defence
(Received February 19, 1.20 a.m.) SINGAPORE, February IS.
A special representative of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that though the Australians and New Zealanders would be wise to take all precautions against the war in the Pacific there is no specific reason for alarm at. present. The situation is admittedly very grave, but it. has been so since the beginning of the year and no special changes have occurred within the last fortnight.
Singapore is becoming the chief centre of interest in the East, and many newspaper correspondents, including a number of Americans from Shanghai, are now gathered here, In spite of the great military and air activity and the presence in Malaya of a number of famous regiments, the signs of war preparations are not very obvious in Singapore itself, where there has been no evacuation and the pleasant social life continues.
