British Ships Surprised
(Received February 19, I -’.20 a. in.} FUNCHAL. February 18.
The raider which attacked tiie British convoy in the Atlantic last week flew the British flag, according to survivors. It was powerful and heavily armed, and it joined the. convoy at about midnight on Thursday 'about 250 miles southwest of Madeira, and steamed with it for about four hours. Suddenly it increased speed and began firing. The British ships, after a few moments’ surprise, returned the fire and, it is believed, hit the raider, which made oft at top speed.
It is understood that the convoy consisted of IS ships, ol which six were sunk, and six have arrived at Madeira. The whereabouts of the remainder is not known.
