BOY DECAPITATED BY TRAIN
Accident At Whakatu
Dominion Special Service.
NAPIER, February 13. A verdict that Cameron Smith, 11year son of Mr. Cameron Smith, an employee at Whakatu freezing works, met his death on January 31 at Whakatu by decapitation when by misadventure he was run over by a train on the main line was returned by the coroner, Mr. Miller, S.M., at an inquest today. The driver of the train, William Johnson, Napier, said on coming off a bridge he noticed a boy on the line about 70 yards away. The boy was walking on one rail, balancing himself with a long stick. Witness gave a blast of the whistle, but. the boy took no notice. Witness pulled up within a trainlength. Other members of the train crew gave similar evidence. There were no defects in the child’s hearing or eyesight, said Constable JII. Bonnington, Clive. The coroner said that evidently the boy did not hear the whistle or mistook it for one of the freezing works shunting locomotives. No blame wtrs attached to the train staff.
