FIRE IN WOOL STORE

Small Number Of Bales Damaged

Four motor-pumps and a salvage van attended an outbreak of lire in Dalgety and Company’s wool store in Tliorndon Quay, Wellington, as a result of a call at 1.25 a.m. yesterday. About 30 bales of wool were damaged by fire and a much larger number by water, but structural damage was confined to a section of tlie floor, which fell through, and windows. When the brigadesmen arrived heavy black smoke was pouring from windows and the door of ti car dock, through which leads of hose were taken. Another attack was made at the' rear, hoses being led through an adjoining section of the same building and iit through the rear windows of the section in which the lire was burning. It was in tlie rear section that tlie floor of the first story fell in. This was responsible for tlie damaged bales of wool. The second story was not affected, but tlie ground floor, where the outbreak is thought to have originated. was slightly damaged by water and lire. The source of the blaze is at present hidden under a pile of burst and damp wool bales, and this will have to be moved before further investigation can be made. Work in the unaffected parts of tlie store is proceeding normally.
