WELLINGTON TAXIS
Refusal To Take Fares Alleged
WARNING BY COUNCIL
Consequent upon complaints received ot taxi drivers in some instances refusing to take fares from tlie Wellington wharves and railway station to certain parts of the city, lite Wellington City Council decided last night to advise taxi companies that if this practice did not cease the taxi drivers concerned would run the risk of losing their licences. Tlie Railways Department and the harbour board are to be asked to co-operate with the council in dealing with such offenders. Reference was made to a tendency on the part of taxi drivers to revert to the practice of one man owning more than one car, which in the opinion of some councillors was not. iu the best interests of-the public. The suggestion was made that the Metropolitan Licensing Authority might consider the matter and endeavour to adhere to the principle of “owner-drivers.” No resolution to this effect, however, was before the council.
