Women .Writers

There was a large attendance _of members at the meeting of the New Zealand AA’omen AVriters’ and Artists Society held in the Lyceum Club rooms, Wellington. The well-known journalist and author, Aliss Elsie K. Alorton, Auckland, was the guest-speaker for the evening, her subject ’being “Highlights of a AVorld Tour.” Alost travellers leaving New Zealand, said Aliss Alorton, have a definite programme in view, but she set out merely hoping to see as much as possible and several things in .particular, namely, the great Temple of Borabordue, in Java; the Blue Grotto of Capri; the Giants Causeway, and the flower fields of the Dolomites. L t -i She started her tour with the Dutch East Indies, where she found the rich symbolism and beauty, the legendary carvings and intricate crafts of the East. In these lands of terraced ricefields and mountain jungle she explored the ruins of age-old temples. On the Continent she achieved the ascent to the Dolomite Alonntains, where, in a setting of needle-pointed peaks and vast cliffs, spread the alpine meadows of flowers—blue gentians, delphiniums, larkspurs, forget-me-nots, ranunculus, wild scabious and wallflowers, all growing in their natural state and indescribably lovely. Aliss Morton also gave brief vignettes of Italy—Milan, Rome, the Blue and Green Grottos of Capri. Other countries described included England, Holland. Norway and Palestine. Aliss Nelle Scanlan, president, voiced the society’s appreciation of Aliss Morton’s delightful address and (lowers were presented to them both bj the secretary, Airs. E. B. A'. Phillips. LuiIng supper opportunity was afforded members to meet Miss Morton, and she answered many questions concerning her travels.
