COMMENT BY MAYOR OF LOWER HUTT
The mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, said yesterday that as soon as he had looked into the position of people who would be included in the new city area he realized that they would be unable to fill in the required form that provided for three months’ residence. He thereupon informed the Department of Internal Affairs of the position and was advised that the matter would be looked into. So far as he could ascertain. Mr. Andrews said those people affected would not be allowed to vote at the forthcoming municipal elections. He pointed out, however, that actually no hardship was being suffered by anyone, for non-ratepayers in the county did not previously have a municipal vote in any case, whereas county ratepayers would still be entitled to their county vote.
It would probably be necessary for the returning officer to be backed by legal opinion on the matte)', Mr. Andrews added, when the time came for him to put the electoral roll in order.
