Conditions In Italy
(Hritieb Official Wlrelese.i (Received February 11, 7.5 p.m.) RUGBY, February 10.
The careful piecing together of Italian Government measures on the economic front gives a. clear picture of dwindling supplies, rising prices, transport difficulties and civilian privations. Cereals, fats, charcoal, raw cotton, rubber, leather and petrol are among the commodities in short supply. A census of Ihe main foodstuffs ordered for mid-.lanuary is believed to provide a basis for the new system of rationing by provinces so as to make the best use of local production and reduce transport to a minimum. A cash bonus has been offered to charcoal producers for the first three months of this year.
Limitations have been imposed on the consumption of raw cotton, wool and leather. Standard types of shoes are to be manufactured, a motor tyre census has been ordered and the small Civilian petrol ration Ims been reduced by 30 per cent. Clothing price increasers have been repeatedly an
nouticed. Slamlard shoes must have the price marked on them. lielaii prices for charcoal ami Hie wholesale prico of potatoes have been fixed.
