Survey Of Housing In Masterton County MASTERTON. February 11. The question of a survey of the county to provide for Hie housing of eity dwellers in the event of an evacuation following earthquake or enemy action was discussed ar a meeting of ilie Masterion County Council today. The subject was raised by a let ler from the Wellington emergency precautions organization dealing wil h evacuation. ami il was agreed that lhe chairman. Mr. R. E. G. lx>e. ami the county clerk. Mr. .1. C. D. Maekley, should confer with rhe mayor. Mr. .lordan, regarding the allocation of the cost, of making lhe survey.
Tim (‘onnt.v clerk pointed out that it was the evacuation of cities and towns in France which clogged the rotttls with refugees, seriously hampered troop movements, and contributed to France’s downfall.
"I quite agree,” said Ur. \V. I. Armstrong. "I believe that someone in Auckland has proposed that in the event of enemy action Auckland imople stay where they are. I admire the spirit behind that suggestion." Cr. G. Moore said shelters should lie constriu-led in the hills in Wellington immediately. "It would he possible to construet inpregimble shelters in these hills.” he said. "It should be done now."
