Year's Work A Fine Record Of Service

The annual report of the Wellington Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade is a fine record of patriotic work and service to the public. Twenty-four meetings have been held during the year, and at the close there was a membership of 34. Twentysix members passed the annual examination. Sixteen members and one cadet passed an air-raid precautions examination and several passed a hygience examination. Members assisted at the public hospital at the weekends in October, and also assisted the Wellington Suburban Division at their duty in December. Twenty members did duty at the hospital on 62 occasions, representing 130 hours of work. Five members did hospital training for 60 hours to become efficient nursing aides. Eleven members have now undergone this training. During the past year 20 members have put in 200 attendances, representing 6204 hours on duty, and have attended 102 cases. Several cadets also assisted the members of the senior division.

Several members have been busy knitting and making comforts for the combined St. John and Red Cross patriotic committee. Others have attended regularly at the Red Cross rooms on Friday, devoting all their time to war work for the military hospitals. Members have also been collecting silver paper, tinfoil, and other waste metals for selling in aid of the patriotic fund. Members have again assisted on various street days such as those for the Metropolitan Patriotic Appeal and also on Poppy Day and Rose Day. Officers and members of the division have given assistance in demonstration work and some of the St. John Ambulance classes, which have increased in number because of the war. They have also assisted at classes for various boys’ and girls’ organizations. Cadet Division. The Cadet Nursing Division has also had a busy year, according to the annual report. Forty-two meetings have been held, and the membership Is 56. Twenty-two cadets passed a preliminary first aid examination, and 14 passed in preliminary home nursing. Seven passed senior examinations in first aid and home nursing. Fifteen cadets passed their annual re-examin-ation, and five passed in senior first aid. Fifteen cadets qualified for their second proficiency badge, five being new members, and 24 qualified for (heir first proficiency badge, nine being new members. One hundred and seventy-two proficiency certificates were gained by cadets during the year. Several cadets assisted at public duty during the Centennial Exhibition, and also again on Anzac Day. The senior cadets have been able to render first aid at their work on -many occasions.
