OPTIMIST IN ROME

Turning Of Tables On General Wavell (British Official Wireless.) (Received 'February 3. 7 p.m.) RUGBY, February 2. Not only at home but at their fighting fronts, the Italians are beginning to understand the meaning of the blows struck by Britain in the Middle East. In his latest broadcast from Rome to the Italian armed forces, the commentator, 'Signor Ansaldo, has admitted the serious nature of the British offensive. He tried to hearten his hearers by promising that the tables would be turned —-later. “It is in relation to the perspectives to which they point that we must view the military events in the Mediterranean and Greece,” he said. “We will then understand that everything t-iat has happened in North Africa and Greece —painful as it is for us —has but a relative value when viewed in proportion to the final outcome. There is no doubt that in this coming period we will have every opportunity of overturning the successes of “Wavell to our own honour and advantage.” There is no doubt, too, that Ansaldo and many of his hearers will have the opportunity, not of overturning General Wavell’s successes, but of turning over the account of the British successes on every front as described in today’s communique.
