GERMAN EFFORT TO SMASH MALTA
Surprise Awaiting Goering (Received February 2, 10.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, February 1. An R.A.F. ace, in an article written for the North American Newspaper Alliance, declares that Marshal Goering is personally directing a terrific effort to smash Malta by forcing it to surrender. He is apparently impatient at happenings in the Mediterranean, and the fact that Italian planes have virtually been driven from tlie skies. Goering is banking on tlie fact that tlie Sttika dive-bombers are unmatched for speed and armament by anything publicly known to be suitable for flight from aircraft carriers. However, Goering is in for n nasty surprise. The British have developed tlie Fairey Fulham, which has terrific speed. It is a laud-fighter, but various secret devices enable it to land slowly on a flying deck. The Fairey Fulham carried a particularly formidable armament.
