EIRE FRIENDLY TO BRITISH
Journalist’s Impression (Received February 2, 8.20 p.m.) LONDON, February 1. The English author and journalist, Mr. J. L. Hodson, in an article in the “Sunday Times” after a recent visit to Eire, says he fonud little or no hostility but the warmest friendliness. “I was frequently assured that I would find no pro-Gernians in Eire,” he said. “I believe that 90 per cent, of the Irish want Britain to win, but an equally large number support Mr. de Valera’s strict neutrality, the strongest argument for which is the country’s defencelessness. Goering could devastate any Irish town without a semb lance of resistance. “Many Irishmen, as a result of Mr. Churchill’s reference to Irish ports, believe that Britain is putting on some form of economic screw but though there are shortages a real lack of food is most unlikely.”
