STRONG HOME GUARD

Wairarapa District Has A 50 Per Cent. Response Out of an adult male population in Greytown town and district of about 500, enlistments Io date in the Homo Guard have totalled 203. “Allowing for those whose duties, age or physical disabilities prevent them from joining we estimate that we have over 50 per cent, of those available,” the secretary of tlie organization writes. “Our parades are very well attended ami sections of alt the necessary units, including rifle, macliine-gun, engineering, motor-cycle, transport, signalling, mounted and ambulance have been formed. Many of the men are practising and drilling two nights a week whilst about 30 attend a class for officers and n.c.o.’s at Carterton once .i week in addition to the parades in Grey town. This class is conducted by officers and n.c.o.’s of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment and several of the instructors journey from Masterton at their own expense to help us. We are, of course, most grateful for this assistance. “Again, to show how enthusiastic our members have become, it is worthy of note that quite a. large number motor, cycle, or ride horses from 10 to 20 miles to attend the weekly parades. Most of these are farmers or farm employees who have been “on deck” since 5 a.m. or earlier. “Unfortunately the whole movement is at present hampered by lack of training equipment but we ha.ve been assured that this will be remedied as soon as possible. If anything can bo done to expedite this it will certainly give the movement a good boost.”
