MANAWATU PATRIOTIC WORK

Quietly anil efficiently to the click of many needles, the knitting aud hussifs branch of the Mauawatu Patriotic Society is doing splendid work preparing articles for the men overseas. Mrs. K. S. Manning is convener and she has the assistance of a small but energetic committee. There is no lack of willing workers, and the women of Palmerston North are not slow to offer their services and are doing excellent work.

Two cases of articles were sent away at Christmas time and since January 13, when the branch resumed operations, a good many more articles have been completed. Foremost in the display last week were several polo neck jerseys, mainly for use by men of the navy'in the cold months. Double knitted throughout, they are of considerable weight and warmth. Many of them find their way to Lite men on the minesweepers in the North Sea. There were many scarves of decked, khaki and navy blue wool, with balaclavas of the same colours. Mittens and skullcaps, too, were plentiful.

The knitting is not confined to adults, for in two large containers were hundreds of peggy squares which had been knitted by school children. The squares are sewn together as quilts, lined, ami. with a coloured top, present ti really attractive appearance.
