BLAZE IN MATAURA

Seventh Since August (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GORE, December 28. A large store at the corner of River and Lodge Streets, Mataura, owned by the mayor of Mataura, Mr. C. D. McConnell, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The building had been used as a store for skins and a large quantity of paper pulp for the New Zealand Paper Mills. The contents were lost or severely damaged. No fire was seen at 1 a.m., but half an hour later the place was a roaring furnace. The brigade succeeded in saving adjoining buildings. A strong suspicion of incendiarism attaches to the fire, which is the seventh in ;t series since August. The police have been investigating the previous fires, and a detective arrived from Invercargill this morning to make further inquiries. The damage is estimated at £3006.
