OBITUARY

Mr. J. W. Carswell The death occurred in Bideford on Tuesday of Mr. John William Carswell, at the age of 81, says a "Dominion;* Special Service message from Masterton. „ . Mr. Carswell was born in Ntrpier, where his parents owned_ the first bakery business established in the town. After working for a number of years on Bowlands station, he took up a block of bushland in the Maungarai Valley, and cleared it himself before turning io farming. In 1902 he acquired his Bideford property aud lived there till his death. He was at various times a member of the Bideford Road Board, chairman of the Bideford School Committee and chairman of the Bideford Hal! Trustees, and w;as connected with a number of other bodies in the district. . Mr. Carswell was predeceased by Ins first wife 2-1 years ago. He remarried in 1928, and is survived by his second wife and his family by his first marriage. These are: Messrs. John Carswell (Matahiwi), Arthur Carswell (Tauranga), James Carswell (Wairoa), Archibald Carswell (Trentham Camp), and Donald Carswell (Bideford), and Mrs. It. B. Madden (Carrington). Three sons lost their lives in the last war. There are 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. W. Prew Mr. William Prew, a resident of Eoxton for the past 39 years, died in Palmerston North hospital on Tuesday at the age of 86, says a ‘’Dominion” Special Service message. Born in West Bromwich, England, the son of a minister, he was trained for that calling, but with the outbreak of the Zulu War in 1879 he Volunteered for service and became a member of D Troop of Lonsdale’s Mounted Rifles. He saw service throughout the war, from April 1 to September 30, serving with the Hirst Division (General Crealock’s) up to thp time of the division being demobilized, and then with Colonel Clarke’s Plying Squadron during the advance on Ulundi and the pursuit and capture of Cetewayo. He returned with the same column by the .Middle Drift. He was discharged with the highest recommendations and his discharge certificate was among his most treasured-possessions.

After the fighting was over he returned to England, but Ills restless spirit took him three times round the world before he finally settled down in Australia, where he married in 1881 and for some time was engaged in wheatfarming. lie came to Nfew Zealand -18 years ago and went into the sawmilling industry at Rata, his family joining him a year later. From there his new calling took him to Dannevirke and finally to Foxton 39 years ago, when he was engaged at Gibb's Mill. He subsequently retired and lived in Johnston .Street (ill his wife died six years ago. Since then be had been residing with Mrs. Coritfoof. and latterly with his daughter. Mrs. W. Broad, Frances Street. About four months ago he suffered a stroke which necessitated his removal to hospital. He came home again, but only for a short time, when he was compelled to return to hospital; Mr. Prow loaves a family of two sons and three daughters—Messrs. Mr. Sorbic, who was aged 71, was born in Paisley, Scotland. He word: to Foxton a good many years ago from ■Wellington, to take over a milk round, which he conducted till about two years ago. Since then ho had been living In retirement with Mi’, ami Mrs. H. Parfitt. Cole Street. Up experienced good health till quite recently and was admitted to hospital only last week. The funeral took place in Palrnerstou Norrjh yesterday afternoon.
