The Wairarapa committee which is functioning in Masterton for the assistance of British orphans has received some 80 offers to adopt or assume guardianship of children, and further offers are still coining in. The scheme is distinct from the plans now being made by the Government to bring British children to New Zealand for the duration of the war. Meantime, members of the permanent staff of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., in New Zealand and Australia have offered to care for the children of the permanent staff in England for the duration of the war. Offers so far received from the stall’ indicate ftlirrt more than .1.00 children could be accommodated without difficulty. and, if necessary, this number could be increased considerably. If the scheme is adopted, the children will be distributed among the firm’s employees in Masterton, Feilding, Waitara and Belfast. HAWKE’S BAY PLANS Meeting Of Local Body Representatives Dominion Special Service. NAPIER, July 3. The control and reception of children from Great Britain who are to be found homes in Hawke’s Bay were discussed at a meeting of mayors and chairman of Hawke’s Bay local bodies over which the mayor of Napier, Mr. Hercock, presided. Zone committees were set up and it was left to the authorities to appoint their own local committees. Because quite a few applications had been made contingent on the applicants being able to adopt the child permanently. it was resolved to recommend to the Minister of Internal Affairs that a considerable number of orphan children should be included in those brought to New Zealand. Mr. H. -R. Wilmot agreed to accept the position of honorary secretary to the committee.
