GOLDEN KOWHAI ON OLD LIBRARY SITE
0 Fate Depends On Use Made Of Land Dovers of native trees have been.inquiring what will lie the destiny of the golden kowhai tree which, with a cabbage-tree and other natives, grows in a grassy plot on the Wakefield Street side of the old Wellington Central Library. The Director of Parks and Reserves, Mr. J. G. Mackenzie, said yesterday llml the fate of the tree would depend upon the future use made of the old library site. There had been some talk of the building being demolished, and the open space left as a restingplace in the heart of the city. If this came about, the tree would certainly be left standing. If, however, another building were erected on the site, or such use made of it as would demand the piece of land where the tree now stood, it would in his opinion be impossible to save il. It was too big to transplant. Kowhais were at any time very difficult to I r.'insplant, except as seedlings or pot-plants, and be would say il would be impossible to save it by al tempting lo place il elsewhere. "You can be certain the tree will not be destroyed if it is possible to preserve it,” lie said.
