SMALLER OUTPUT OF BUTTER

Wairoa Dairy Company HARD WINTER AND LABOUR DIFFICULTIES Dominion Special Service. WAIROA, January 5. The output of the Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., for the first five months of the present season is below that for the same period of the year ended June, 1039, and very considerably smaller than for the first five months of the 1937-38 season. Two factors to which this is largely attributed are the exceptionally hard winter. which resulted in the loss of a large number of cows, and the difficulty many dairy-farmers have bad in connexion with labour. It is reported that not a few farmers have given up cows altogether, and others have had to reduce their herds to a size with which they can cope singlehanded or with the assistance of members of their families. To date the output for the present season is 222 tons of butter, as against 231 tons for the corresponding period of last season and 285 tons for the previous year.
