NOTED SOUTHLAND STUD

Foalings At Otautau CONSORTS OF SIEGFRIED AND SALMAGUNDI Dominion Special Service. INVERCARGILL, December 12. It is many years since such a fine collection of mares and foals have been assembled as those at Mr. A. Chisholm's Glentruin Stud at Otautau at present. His two sires, Siegfried and Salmagundi, have both doue big seasons, with mares being sent from all parts of New Zealand to them. Mr. Chisholm has increased the size of his stud in recent years and his property at Otautau —of 300 acres of the best grassland in Southland —is now one of the show places of the province. 'Some years ago Mr. Chisholm imported Glentruin and Sabor, and later on he brought out Celerity II aud Spean Bridge. Both Glentruin, a great race mare who won £lO,OOO in stakes, and Sabor, are dead now, but they have several daughters to carry on. Spean Bridge (the dam of Auctor) and Celerity II (the dam of Boswell) are still being bred from, and the influence of these importations ou Southland racing is an important factor. Mr. Chisholm has five yearling fillies by Salmagundi from liis own mares, as well as one yearling colt. The fillies are out of Loehlaggen (Woodend s—Glentruin), 5 —Glentruin), Enwood (Woodend —Sabor), Royal Emblem (an Australian-bred mare by Emblematic), Spean Bridge .(imp.) aud Tatarepo (Solferino —Hineamaru). Lochlaggen’s filly is an outstanding type for a first foal, and some interest is being shown in the stud career of this mare. The Enwood filly is also a first foal and shows a lot of quality. The colt from Balia Salla, a Balboa mare from Orderdown, is well grown. Two three-year-olds on the farm have been well done by and are of good size. Both are Iby Irish Lancer, one being a gelding from Tatarepo and the other a filly from Celerity 11. Salmagupdi’s oldest stock in Southland are now yearlings, while the Son-iu-Law horse Siegfried is doing his first season here.
