TE AWAMUTU CUP

Form Of Llangollen NOTES AND COMMENTS Beaupartir Not Penalized For Auckland Race The Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday should provide a stirring contest as 12 of the horses engaged have entered' for the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie ou Boxing Day. Dictate will be an absentee, but the presence of other form horses should find the betting widely spread. An interesting runner will be Llangollen. Her recent racing has been confined to sprint distances, but she has proved her ability to go further by her success at Te Aroha last year in the Herries Memorial Cup, one mile and three furlongs. She has 9.0 on Saturday and 8.1 in the big Auckland two-mile race. Topweight's Task. Success for Golden Sheila, topweight with 9.12, would be popular. It is 61b. more than she carried when she won the Alison Cup. She is at the top of her form, but with smart lightweights such as Baran, Gladynev and The Cardinal to set the pace, the Gay Shield mare has a formidable task.

If Going Is Easy. Sly Fox now meets Golden Sheila on 91b. better terms than when he finished second to the mare in the Hamilton Handicap ou the second day at Te Rapa last month. With the sting out of the ground, Sly Fox should be running on at the finish and he and the consistent Balinavar should command plenty of support.

No Cup Penalty. By his victory in the Railway Handicap "at Woodville Beaupartir became liable for a rehandicap in the Auckland Cup, but the handicapper, Mr. F. J. McMancmin has decided not to alter his original handicap.

Duke of Gloucester Cup. Both the Southland Racing Club and the Riverton Racing Club may apply for permission to hold the Duke of Gloucester Cup race on their respective programmes this year.

Yours Truly Withdrawn. Yours Truly was withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting at. 9 a.m. ou Monday.

No Racing in France. According to English newspapers received by the last mail, racing in France received a knock-out blow when the war broke out, and all meetings for the flat racing season were abandoned. Horses, many of them from the leading stud farms, were requistioned by the military authorities, and many owners, trainers, and jockeys were called up to the colours. New Quarters. Two members of H. Rama's team, Taaue Pango and Mitss Appellant, who have been trained at Ellerslie by D. Arnott for some time have been transferred

to Trentham, where their owner has lately acquired a property.

For Waipa. J. H. Jefferd arrived at Te Awamutu on Tuesday with Baran and Indian Sun, Baran claims an engagement in the principal race and Indian Sun is on the minimum iu the Hack Cup, nine furlongs.

Jockey Recovered. The light-weight jockey S. Tremain, who has been laid aside for several weeks with an injured foot, attended the track at Ellerslie last week and is to resume riding at Te Awamutu next Saturday. t Trained On.

A northern report credits Balinavar with pleasing track-work at Te Awamutu and on his second to Birthday Boy over one and a quarter miles ou the second day of the Auckland meeting last month, he’ should have prospects in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. The distance is the same and he will again.carry 8.7. Birthday Boy is not engaged in the cup, but has 9.6 (topweight) in the Paterangi Handicap, seven furlongs

Besiege Works Well. Besiege . (Horne) ran six furlongs in 1.18 at Te Awamutu on Tuesday morning, Te Monowai (Pratt) accompanying the last five in 1.5. They finished together and Besiege, who has been. working very well, was running on solidly. Besiege has not had a race since he failed over seven furlongs and 60 yards at Ohinemuni at the end of September, but he is a useful customer when right. He is engaged at Waipa over seven furlongs on Saturday. Reminders. Nominations for the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting on December 30 and January 1 arc due at 8 o'clock tonight. Manawatu first-day acceptances close tomorrow night at 9 o'clock. Answers To Correspondents. “Yank,” Masterton: (1) £l/16/-. (2) 11/-. (3) £2. (4) 18/6. (5) £2. “Interested.” Nelson: (1) £3/5/6. WHISKY FOR HORSE Trainer Denies Report A report was recently circulated in Melbourne to the effect that whisky was administered to the good performer Mai; kai on race mornings for the purpose of steadying his nerves. The matter came under the notice of the stewards of the Victoria Racing Club. The trainer, F. Godby, told the stewards that Maikai was not given whisky. An official statement issued from the office of the Victoria Racing Club read :— “The stipendiary stewards interviewed F. Godby, trainer of Maikai. concerning the statement which appeared in the Press that whisky had been administered before the horse ran in the Williamstown Cup and Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield. Godby declared that no whisky had been given to Maikai before the horse raced and that the statements in the Press that it had been administered were incorrect. The stewards accepted Godby’s explanation.”

The chairman of the Australian Jockey Club stewards, Mr. George Williams, pointed out that the practice would not be permitted in Sydney, as the rule of racing prohibited its use at any time if it was intended to affect a horse’s speed, stamina or courage. '
