FINAL CONCERT

Recreation Week Ends In

Wellington

xMASSED BANDS PARADE

Recreation week in Wellington was brought to a conclusion last night with a grand concert organized by the AVellington Bands’ Association, which was presented to a large audience in the Town Hall. The programme was most comprehensive aud was given a magnificent reception.

Apologies for the inability of the Act-ing-Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. larry, who had been directly responsible for the physical welfare movement, to attend were expressed by Mr. Gladstone Hill, under whose direction the programme was expeditiously put through. I Thanks to those who had directly associated themselves with the events during the week were conveyed by the mayor, Mr. Hislop, who briefly reviewed its objects and expressed the appreciation that was due to those who had worked assiduously to ensure the success of the week. In particular he paid a tribute to the de-puty-mayor, Mr. M. F. Luckie, aud his committee. For.the evening’s programme they were greatly indebted to the Wellington Bands’ Association, said Air. Hislop, who mentioned that because of the war and the inability of the AA’elsh Guards band to visit New Zealand the music for the exhibition, which would open in AA’ellington on November 8, would be supplied entirely by New Zealand bands. The high standard they had set would ensure that there should be no fears as to the excellence of that music, and he felt sure that the people of AVellington. in fact of the whole Dominion, would be pleased that such an opportunity would be afforded New Zealand bands of playing their part in the celebration of the first 100 years of the country’s existence. Before the concert six AVellington brass and pipe bands marched from the De Luxe Theatre to the Town Hall.
