Brougham Hill Club Competition

The vice-president’s competition on the Brougham Hill courts stood as follows as the result of last week’s play :— Leading women; Mrs. Congalton, Miss Somerville, Miss Joy Wearne. equal first ; Mrs. Dickson. Mrs. Adams. Mrs. O Neill and Miss E. Miles, equal second. ' Leading men: D. M. AVest. J. H. Gentley L. Cook, equal first; R. Hunt, E. Palliser, N. Sullivan, E. C. AVearne, equal second. Wellesley Club The Wellesley Tennis Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon. The club captain, Mr. V. J. Clarke, referred to the handicap the club would be under during the coining season because of one of its three courts being temporarily unavailable For that reason it would be necessary to restrict, the membership meanwhile, he said. Referring to the death toward the close of the past season of Mr. Jack Sangster, a member of the club and one of the four men left in the men's singles championship. Mr. Clarke said that as a niark of respect the other three players had defaulted in favour of the late Mr. Sangster. Mrs. L. J. Sangster, who was present, was asked to accept the championship cup aud the miniature accompanying it on behalf of her late son. There was also- on display a cup of unusual design given to the club by Airs. Sangster in memory of her son. It will be known as the Jack Sangster Memorial Cup, and will be for annual competition in the' men’s singles. Air., Clarke thanked Mrs. Sangster on behalf of the club. Crawford Hill Club The president of the Crawford Hill Club. Air. B. C. Ashwin, in declaring the club's season open on Saturday afternoon, referred to the effect of the war ou tennis, and expressed the hope that it would be ended before the present season was out. He spoke of the good state of the club's property, and wished everyone present a successful ami enjoyable season’s tennis. Air. Ashwin then served the first ball, which carried streamers in the club colours. Mr. W. AV.
