SPECIAL FORCE

Officers Leave For District Camps

UNITS TO BE TAKEN OVER NEXT WEEK

Arrangements have been completed for officers and non-commis-sioned officers to leave today to take up their duties in the three military district camps—Ngaruawahia, Trentham and Burnham. Their first duty will be to make preparations to take over their units when the men of the special force reach camp next week.

A draft of seven officers and 57 N.C.O.’s arrived from the Northern Military District by the Limited express yesterday en route for Burnham Camp, training headquarters for the Southern District. The draft officer in charge is Major F. J. Gwiiliam, North Auckland Regiment. On arrival, tiie men paraded on the platform and were told that meals had been arranged for them at the station restaurant. The baggage was taken on Army lorries to Buckle Street, and they were then dismissed till 7.15 p.m. at which time they were required to parade at the Lyttelton ferry wharf. Tiie draft was joined by officers and N.C.O.’s from the Central District who have been drafted to Burnham Camp. RECRUITS SELECTED Wellington And Hutt Valley Notices were sent out yesterday to recruits in tiie three military districts who are to enter camp next week. The preliminary list of names selected from the No. 5 area—Wellington and Hutt Valley—include the names of some men engaged in “reserved” occupations and who, for that reason, may not be called up. Cosgrove, WELFARE WORK Visitor From England At present in Wellington is Miss Grace Gobby, a women's welfare worker from England. Miss Gobby said yesterday that the women’s welfare workers in England were specially trained, and came under the jurisdiction of the diocesan authorities in the various counties. There was usually one such worker to a deanery in England, but perhaps that did not convey very much to people in New Zealand. Miss Gobby’s work in England was done latterly in Brighton. The marvellous growth of Brighton’s suburbs during the last five or six years was not all to the good, she said, for very charming villages li'acl been wiped out in favour of modern bungalows. These were to be seen ou every hand; very little of the immediate country had been left unspoiled by the hand of the speculative builder. On her way to Australia and New Zealand. Miss Gobby stopped at Bombay, and there undertook similar work to that site had been accustomed to at Home. There, however, her work was confined to two classes of women, white and Eurasian. She had nothing to do witli Hindu or Moslem women. The visitor spoke most interestingly of the problem presented by the Eurasians.
