CHARGES AGAINST TWO OFFICIALS

Alleged Sydney G.P.O. Scandal CANBERRA. August 2. It was announced lust night Hint the Commonwealth Director-General of Works, Mr. M. W. Mehaffey, and the Commonwealth Director of Works in New South Wales, Mr. J. Orwin, have been suspended from duty as a result of charges under the Public Service Act arising out of the report of the Royal Commission on the contract for the remodelling of the Sydney Post Office. Their cases will be dealt with by a departmental committee. The Royal Commission found that the Commonwealth Director-General , of Works failed in his duty in not giving proper instructions that the contract was not to be signed, but that there was no suspicion of bribery or dishonesty of any sort among Commonwealth Ministers or departmental officers in the acceptance of the tender. It also found that the instruction issued hy Cabinet that the contract was not to be signed did not reach the Director of Works in Sydney, Mr. Orwin, till after he had.signed the contract.
