Veteran Railways Officer Retires z The retirement of Mr. C. G, McGonagle, goods agent, New Zealand Railways, AVellington, has closed a career 'of 40 years’ service with the Railways Department. Since he joined the department as a cadet in Wanganui, jnany changes have taken place. In 1901 he was transferred to Wellington just after the Government took over the Manawatu Railway, and it was at this period of bis career that be was appointed assistant relieving officer. In 1910 Mr. McGonagle was transferred to AVestiport. In 1914 he was transferred back to Wellington, and at the close of the war was appointed to Pon. Ahuriri. Later he was chief clerk. Marton, and then was transferred to Picton. Acting in the capacity o* traffic inspector in both Wellington ami Dunedin during 1929-32. he later took up the position of assistant stationmaster, Christchurch, and during that period also acted as stationmaster, Christchurch. He returned to AVellington as goods agent in 1937. Before a large and representative gathering in the goods office on the eve. of his retirement, a presentation to Mr. McGonagle was made by Mr. A. L. Smith, the district traffic manager at AA’ollington, on behalf of the goods stallMr. Smith spoke eulogistioally of Mr. McGonagle's splendid, services to the Railways Department, extending over 40 years, and his remarks were endorsed by other speakers. Mr. McGonagle was presented with an inscribed gold watch for himself, and a silver afternoon tea set for Mrs. McGonagle.
