BUND GUESTS' INSPIRING CHEERFULNESS

A very happy afternoon was spent recently at the Blind Club rooms, Wellington, the occasion being a ■ birthday party in honour of Miss E. Biddle, who is 70 years of age and has been blind and deaf for 63 years. Many old friends of the guest were present as well as fifty club members. Those who have known her for many years have remarked on Miss Biddle’s inspiring cheerfulness and sense of humour. Several telegrams and letters of congratulation were received, the contents of which were conveyed to her by manual language. Miss Biddle can both read and write Braille which enables her to correspond with blind persons in different parts of the world. She was the recipient of many useful gifts, among which was an eiderdown quilt from club members. Afternoon tea was served, and a two-tiered birthday cake placed in front of the guest was described to, her, for which she expressed pleasure and thanked Mrs. Vrede, the club hostess, who made the cake. Mrs. Good, on behalf of Miss Biddle, thanked those present for contributing so much to the afternoon’s pleasure. Songs were given by Mr. Brian O’Brien accompanied by Mr. Eric Bell; songs by two blind girls (visitors) ; and part songs by the Sunbeam Songsters under the direction of Miss Clarice Browne. Items were also given by Bernadine Leamv, Pam Stockdale, Loma Hills, Dorothy Murray and Ngaire Walker.
